Team,
It’s hard to believe we are already through the first quarter of 2022. Overall, the performance of the Group remains strong. Orders are at plan and shipments are slightly behind plan, mainly due to continued constraints in supply chain and labor.
The good news on the labor front is our initiative to hire 30 new technicians in the plant was achieved. Now we will focus efforts to continue to recruit for skilled labor positions. What this ultimately means is reduced lead times and better on-time delivery. You should see standard mechanical-assist mobile and shelving lead times back in the 8-10 week range by mid-June, and other product lead times will continue to improve throughout the year.
Our biggest challenge, aside from the supply chain, is the upward cost increase of all materials and components, not just steel. Steel was forecasted to decline but now supply is being choked and mills are again raising prices. In addition, prices for paint, packaging, electronic components, and transportation, to name a few, continue to climb without notice. Due to these constant price increases, we have no choice but to raise our surcharge again. There is no way we can ask the market to absorb all our costs so we will continue to share in the pain and will be still absorbing much of our price increases. You will see an announcement with all the specific details later this week. These continue to be very turbulent times and we must all be willing to react and change as needed to adapt and remain the market leader.
On a more positive note, you will soon be hearing from the Product Innovation team on some new products and exciting launches.
In the meantime, thanks for all you do and the business you share.
All the best and be sure to “eat the cake”!
Mark Haubenschild | President/CEO
Spacesaver Scorecard
Spring is here and the Spacesaver Group is continuing to warm up – increasing our month-over-month incoming order and shipment totals for the third straight time to start the year! The Patterson Pope team combined to book over $1.5M in new orders, led by the Midwest ($676K) and the GA/AL ($600K) teams. Not to be outdone, the Spacesaver Systems MD group hit 330% of their monthly quota by submitting nearly $1.2M in new orders. Also joining the $1M club for orders was the Southwest Solutions Group (109% of monthly quota), fueled by the team in the Pacific NW, hitting nearly 200% of their monthly quota ($435K). Overall, we had 14 PARs exceed their monthly order quota; bringing our YTD total to 10 PARS over 100%, with an additional 5 over 90%.
As if booking nearly $8M in new orders wasn’t a highlight, we shipped over $8.6M in product! We had 17 PARs exceed their shipment quota – 16 of which are over their YTD shipment quota. StorageLogic took the crown for highest % (471%), while Diversified Storage Solutions and Patterson Pope both exceeded $1M; with Southwest Solutions Group just behind at $960K.
This Group is showing how champions rise to any challenge and find a way to come out victorious! Thank you all for the constant push for excellence!
Reignite Renew Revision
We had a great Principals’ Meeting in February and appreciate everyone that dedicated time to be in attendance. We were not only able to share our 2022 strategic plans with you, but also ReIGNITE the energy within each of you, ReNEW our commitments to support you, and ReVISION our collective future. Our strategies are aligned to continue to be a world-class manufacturer that feeds a world-class distribution group. This will be achieved through:
- Improved operational efficiencies which result in best-of-class, quality manufactured products.
- Investments in R&D to provide new transformational and innovative solutions for our customers.
- Actionable go-to-market strategies to drive thought leadership in our 6 focus markets.
We are excited about the possibilities that 2022 will bring and are eagerly waiting for the return of in-person, face-to-face meetings with our co-workers, distribution partners, and mutual customers. As many of you know, 2022 is also a monumental year for Spacesaver; we’re celebrating our 50th anniversary! We have accomplished so much, but there is still so much more that remains ahead. Now is the time to seize the day!
Vertical Market Updates
Agriculture
Scott Loreaux rejoined the Spacesaver family on March 7, 2022, in the role of Vertical Market Manager – Public Safety & Agriculture. Scott brings a wealth of knowledge of the storage industry that includes over 10 years with Spacesaver. Scott will work closely with our Area Contractor Group and internal departments to drive continued growth of the Public Safety and Agriculture Markets through strategic planning and execution of key initiatives, helping to maintain our position as the industry leader. He’ll be rolling out the markets’ conference calls in early May, so watch for those invites!
Cannabis Regional Trade Show Calendar
There are regional shows all over we think you should check out/participate in! You can find the complete list for the remainder of 2022 here: Regional Trade Shows for the Rest of 2022.
As always, you can contact Scott Loreaux anytime with questions, comments, or insights.
Military
The DOD has come out the gate extremely slowly this year; spending in Q1 and Q2 of the DOD FY is at an all-time low. Even though the National Defense Authorization Act was signed in December of 2021, customers held on tight until the most recent omnibus spending bill was signed; this is due to uncertainty in DOD priorities with regards to the Russia/Ukraine conflict.
On March 15, President Biden fully executed the $1.5T (trillion) spending bill, which includes a slightly higher DOD budget than was presented in our last call together. That number went from $770B (DOD and DOD-related activities) to $782B.
It is imperative that you get in front of your customers; all branches (especially Air Force) will be moving aggressively to fulfill new requirements that have come up since October, but a huge priority will be to get existing requirements going back to FY20 (and beyond) on contract. Contact Pete Rooney to learn more about where to hunt during the first money drop of FY22.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN
We have attended several regional trade shows and have upcoming visits to the following areas: Fort Hood, Minot AFB, Grand Forks AFB, Vandenberg AFB, and the ADS shows Warrior West in San Diego and Warrior East in Virginia Beach. While we aren’t fully open for business travel just yet, if people can benefit with some one-on-one time on the road, please reach out to schedule some time and/or look for invites starting in May.

Unique Customer Challenge. Typical Legendary Customer Service.
Although Military Treatment Facilities (MTF) customers use different products than the average Military end-user, MTF personnel still face challenges related to readiness, property loss, and a need for more usable space (reduced footprint).
Scott Srodes from Spacesaver Intermountain helped the Mike O’Callaghan MTF on Nellis, AFB with all the above. His customer also faced a unique challenge due to the linoleum flooring in the facility, which could not be modified. Scott proposed and sold a High-Density Mobile Storage Unit with 4-post Shelving without anchors on a raised, modular aluminum flooring with integrated rails. This aluminum flooring was also a win for the customer because it is non-porous/absorbent, which can be an issue in areas where sensitive fluid items are stored. Scott grossed about $250,000 through SAIC, which resulted in about $130,000 of NET SSC product.
Library and Education
As NCAA March Madness continues, get in on the fun by voting for your favorite Spacesaver athletics products via any of our social media channels. So far, modular carts, metal shelving, equipment lockers, and modular shelving have lost out to our four finalists, equipment pass-through lockers, mobile workspaces, athletic lockers, and athletic mobile systems. Which will prevail and become the champion of Spacesaver Madness? Learn more here.

Precious Collections Call for Solid Storage
Since Spacesaver and MidAmerica are a trusted and proven duo at St. Olaf College (Northfield, Minnesota), it was a natural fit for our teams to take on their latest storage endeavor–merging five separate collections of precious media and books (including a rare Norwegian book collection) into one private, climate-controlled storage vault. The project is utilizing about 25% of existing Spacesaver products the college had and will be purchasing the remaining 75%, for a Spacesaver net of about $200,000. The project is tentatively scheduled to be finished this fall, so watch for a full case study shortly after!
K-12
Take advantage of this valuable time in the year when schools are finalizing their summer renovation/construction plans! Check out our recent marketing materials about summer planning, like this blog!
Spacesaver was a first-time attendee at the CASH Conference in Sacramento, CA on February 24. Although CASH stands for the Coalition for Adequate Student Housing, this is the premier K-12 facilities show for the state of California. Attendance was high and in addition to speaking with facility end-users, we networked with several architects, general contractors, and furniture dealers that call on the K-12 industry. We continue to invest time and resources into our newest vertical market!

It All Started with a CEU…
It all started with the Transforming Libraries CEU presented by Spacesaver’s Channel Marketing team. An architect, VEBH (now Draw Collective), reached out to Diversified Storage Solutions to learn more about Spacesaver mobile shelving for a K-12 project they were working on at Hampton High School. They wanted to maximize capacity with an easy-to-use, accessible system for their collections in the newly renovated library. Our teams worked directly with Draw Collective to design the perfect system for the footprint, and Spacesaver became the basis of design when the project went out to public bid. Through great collaboration with Draw Collective, and now R.A. Glancy Construction, the Diversified and Spacesaver teams were awarded the project – it’s being installed late this spring!
Museum
Spacesaver was excited to get back on the road to attend the Building Museums Symposium in Washington, D.C. on March 15 – 17. More than 400 architects, museum leaders, planners, project managers, technical experts, and museum professionals were in attendance. Check out our blog and share it on your social channels and with your museum contacts.

Building a Storage Paradise
SHOUT OUT to Kristin Ormand of Patterson Pope for providing (2) mobile systems and various museum cabinets to the National Parks Service (NPS). The solutions will house archival documents, drawings, biological specimens, and historical objects associated with the cultural and natural resources found in the Virgin Islands. The NPS is constructing a multi-building facility for staff housing, tourist engagement, and a research facility since the prior facility was severely damaged in a hurricane. The mobile systems have not been installed yet, but the facility is under construction and should be completed in the next 18 months.
Major Projects
The Government of Yukon’s large-format archive storage is a project that came to us from Scott Crawford, our new Canadian Distribution Sales Manager! He reached out to Director of Storage Systems, Hannah Bare, and inquired about the possibility of working together as a Joint Project. The project consists of installing an MA Mobile System in an existing building and will include a mix of 4-post shelving, Safco cabinets, Viking 420 Flat Files, Widespan, and even a wall-mounted art rack. It was a true team effort between Emily Martin, Joe Leibfried, Scott Crawford, Hannah Bare, Steve Pyne, and Scott Adkins to win this project. We’ve just received the contract; if all goes according to plan, this project should be installed by the end of the year.
Marketing Minute
Over the last several years, our sales and marketing team has developed Go-To-Market plans that drive how we engage with our key target markets and create demand for Spacesaver’s products and solutions. To continue to better align with our corporate strategies, we are changing how Business Development prospects for long-term construction leads within Dodge Data & Analytics.
Dodge is a valuable tool in ensuring that our pipelines stay strong with high-quality leads and opportunities. Here is a summary of the changes:
On March 21, 2022, our Business Development, Vertical Market, and Channel teams began working collectively to prioritize project leads with the greatest opportunity for impact in our core vertical markets. The Business Development team will nurture these prioritized project leads with the objective of qualifying and sending sales-ready opportunities to you.
On April 1, 2022, we started sharing select long-term construction projects directly with the distribution.
- These reports will include projects that fall within Spacesaver’s core markets but are outside of this year’s targeted focus.
- Information will be generated directly from Dodge and will include the project name, value, architect, and scope. NOTE: The availability of information varies by project, so some data points may be missing.
- Please remember that these leads will not have been nurtured by Business Development and should not be considered sales-ready.
